Daily Paper Prompt #15: Words

{Remember when I said there might not be a photo for each prompt?}

Create art that looks like a scrabble board or a crossword puzzle. You could create a grid using a ruler and add alpha stamps for the letters. Or draw the letters in block letters. Spell actual words, do a haiku, make nonsensical words, as you wish.

And learn one new word today.

floccinaucinihilipilification - 29 letters, noun.

Definition: The action or habit of estimating something as worthless. Origin: Mid 18th century: from Latin flocci, nauci, nihili, pili (words meaning 'at little value') + -fication.

hippopotomonstrosesquipedalian - 30 letters, adjective.

Definition: Of or pertaining to extremely long words. Origin:An extension of sesquipedalian using a modified form of hippopotamus and Latin monstrum; the extensions almost certainly chosen with the intention of making the new construct autological.

Just stumbled onto your blog - love it! I teach grade 8, and my kids and I were investigating phobias one day (playing with words, avoiding "REAL" teaching!) and we discovered that the word "hippopotomonstrosesquipedaliaphobia" means a fear of long words - and we were dying laughing! That launched us into a great discussion on irony :) I love that I randomly popped on here & saw that word - made me smile! Thanks :)

Because I'm a bit behind with my DPP, I combined 15 & 16. I learned a new word. A Flickr contact of mine has a bird named Gabby. She hasn't been well & the vet diagnosised her with cloacal prolapse. To me, it sounded like a problem with her trachia, but when I looked it up, I learned that it is a problem with her female parts ... who knew? I hope Gabby gets better soon!
