Altered Catalog: 3 Dots

 Copy%20of%20080704dotsbook%20Large%20e-mail%20view.jpg

Continuing the adventure of altering a paper catalog. The wirebound heavy cardstock catalog was a good starting point because it had thick quasi-watercolor paper, which did not need to be strengthened, and funky text about paper quality.

For "3 Dots" the first background layer is a 1954 National Geographic map of the West Indies found in my dad's attic this summer. The design started with the polka dotted dress. After some gesso, I added ephemera including postage stamps, magazine clippings, quotes and scrap cardstock. Stamped with a handcarved eraser stamp, edged images with Neocolor II wax crayons, made lines with Golden Fluid Acrylics and added words with alphabet stamps.

Making an art journal is a great way to experience flow ~ to be completely involved, focused and concentrating on what you are doing. Time passes quickly. For more info on flow, check out the books "Creativity" and "Flow" by Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi.
