Art Journal: Swing!

"But there is something about Time.
The sun rises and sets.
The stars swing slowly across the sky and fade.
Clouds fill with rain and snow,
empty themselves, and fill again.
The moon is born, and dies, and is reborn.
Around millions of clocks swing hour hands,
and minute hands, and second hands.
Around goes the continual circle of the notes
of the scale. Around goes the circle of night and day,
the circle of weeks forever revolving,
and of months, and of years."
— Madeleine L'Engle

11x15" watercolor paper, fabric, photos, ephemera

My younger daughter (8) could swing for hours. When she was younger it was one of the places that granted instant calm, euphoria. When she was a toddler, in the baby swing, she would kick off her shoes and laugh when they fell at random. We have rhymes that we say when she swings. She likes me to push her, although she knows how to keep going once I give the first push. Legs out, up! Legs back, down.

my happy place = ice skating rink (especially when I'm the only one there). but, I have to agree with your daughter, swinging is fun too!

ah...i could swing for hours, too, at her age. my mother took me to daffin park most sunday afternoons when i was growing up in savannah. the swings were positioned near moss-laden oaks. i always tried to swing high enough to touch the branches with my toes. thanks for sparking the memory of what was a very happy place and time for me.
