Art & Visual Journaling

When I found an inexpensive yet sturdy hardback ($1) at the discount book store, it was an incentive to alter the book and make an art journal. With the book open, these pages measure 8 x 12". To strengthen and prep the book, I glued pairs of pages together with mod podge. The background is a map with layers of gesso, golden fluid acrylics and fiber paste. Ready for journaling, collage or ephemera.

An art journal background can be anything at all:

  • Paint with black gesso and journal in silver paint marker
  • Collage with magazine or tourist ephemera
  • Paint an acrylic or watercolor wash
  • Staple a sheet of yellow lined notebook paper
  • Glue in swatches of cardstock
  • Paint with white gesso and add lines with markers or crayons
