Create a Mother-Daughter Book Club (Part 5)
Thu, July 10, 2008 at 11:26PM As my daughter entered second grade, I started a mother daughter book club. Check out the other articles on this topic.
SELECT BOOKS
I pulled together reviews, reference information, reading guides, and activity ideas for numerous books and asked moms to bring a copy of any of the potential books to the mom meeting.
At the mom meeting, we passed around the books as we planned the club. We developed some general thoughts on selecting books. For example, if one mom vetoed a book, that was sufficient to exclude from consideration. After all, there are so many books to choose from! Kids have different fears and there is no reason to push subject matter that might cause nightmares or stress. We also ruled out books with inappropriate violence or subject matter we didn't think was appropriate for our kids yet. Those books can be considered in a year or two. We also decided that the club would have no religious aspect, as we were of different backgrounds. Banned books were fair play!
Here are some of our selections:
The Story of a Seagull and the Cat Who Taught Her to Fly (Sepulveda)
Harriet the Spy (Fitzhugh) ~ Literature links from EMINTS.
The Year of Miss Agnes (Kirkpatrick)
The Trumpet of the Swan (White). The story of a mute swan named Louis who becomes a famous jazz trumpet player to compensate for his lack of a natural voice.
The Year of the Dog (Lin) ~ Reviewed at KidsReads.
That wraps up creating a mother-daughter book club!
