FIMO Fossils

We collected bits of nature from the garden in the early morning. The goal was to make pretend fossils using FIMO Soft polymer clay. I'd originally read about the idea at Write, Mama, Write and was intrigued with the idea so I put it on my list of art projects for the summer.

After collecting leaves, flowers, grass and twigs from the garden, we made balls from FIMO Soft polymer clay (easier on my hands, which weaken quickly) and flattened one side. Under the flat side, we placed a leaf or flower and pushed down with the palm of our hand. Another idea is to gently press grass or twigs into the flat side of the clay, as my older daughter did. Turning the clay over, we pulled off the leaf or flower - sometimes using the tip of a needle or knife to get the little bits out. You can leave some bits in and take them out after baking using water and a needle or your finger. Bake the fossil sculptures in the oven following the instructions on your clay package.

More ideas for using FIMO at FIMO Stamps, FIMO Fabric Stamps & Make FIMO Stones & Pendants, plus a fun Kids Polymer Clay Project tutorial.

Have you tried making pretend fossils? What was the coolest thing you have used?

What a fun idea! While I would have no use for more objects to find a place for, I wonder if I could somehow incorporate this idea into an art journal, perhaps with real clay spread on a page. I look forward to trying it out. Thanks for sharing!
