Flowing Sunshine

"What wouldn't I give now
for a never-changing map
of the ever-constant ineffable?
To possess, as it were,
and atlas of clouds."
~David Mitchell

5.5 x 8" Exacompta sketchbook journal, pitt pen (xs), watercolor

First flowers and now mandalas and suns in psychedelic colors in the Exacompta journal. The first sun was drawn first, then painted. For the others, I painted the backgrounds in watercolor, let them dry overnight and then drew the mandalas on top. The texture is just wonderful for drawing, no drag, lovely. You could do this in photoshop (merging a watercolor background w/sketch), which is cool and you can play and interchange backgrounds, but this is the real thing! FYI, you can find Exacompta sketch journals, unlined, with a super shiny silver edge at Vickery.

I love the colours you're using here! Especially the third one.

Are you liking the Exacompta sketchbook? I like how it can take just about any medium you throw at it. Those grid like dots you're getting here - are those dabbed a bit with a paper towel, or just the texture of the paper?

Sophie, The colors in the third are also my favs; the first two are a bit too "primary" for my liking. I like the Exacompta sketchbook thus far, and this week I hope to draw some mandalas in pitt pen this week, and I'll post those too! The dots are simply from blotting with a paper towell. I kinda like them.

The only problem I've experienced with the Exacompta is that sometimes the texture can break up the pen line a bit - I have to make sure I have a pretty fresh, wet pen (ie, not the one I've had stuffed in a pencil case for months) to get a smooth line. And if I use a fountain pen, fine nibs seem to catch a little on the texture.

Have you tried Neocolors in it yet? I really like the way the texture holds the colour.

Sophie, I've just tried combinations of pitt pens and watercolors thus far; I like your suggestion of neocolors so that will be fun!
