Map Love Madness Begins

8.5x11" map, stitching, colored pencil
In the past week, I've become obsessed with making maps and my mind is swirling with ideas. It all started when I picked the book Personal Geographies: Explorations in Mixed-Media Mapmaking by Jill Berry. After reading just a few pages of the book, an incredible drive to make maps, to invent maps, began. And it is not that I am doing any of the projects in the book - just reading about creative map-making has sparked something just amazing. I haven't yet finished the book, as I am reading it bit by bit. The projects from numerous artists in Jill's book look ultra cool. But I am off on a bunch of tangents which involve stitching, painting, and collage. It's a map quest.

So effective Tammy! Did you doodle with stitches first and then colour? It looks like a lot of fun.
{Tammy}: Wendy, I actually stitched first, then colored in with colored pencils. It was fun!
These are AWESOME!!! I love them and will be trying some out after my girlies are in bed tonight. That book sounds lovely too, I have always been a map girl!
{Tammy}: This might be a good project for kids too - I borrowed my younger daughters colored pencils to color in the map!
oh ME TOO! my book came in the mail on Monday and I've been completely obsessed. (and I wrote a post about how the arrival of my book coincided with your photo organization series and had my head making all kinds of maps and lists and charts).
{Tammy}: iamrushmore, Off to read your post (I am so behind on trying to keep up) but wow, it has been an absolute rush of ideas from every direction and I am THRILLED that you are experiencing it too!
Gorgeous! I have the same question as Wendy above...did you do the stitching or the coloring first? So, so beautiful.
{Tammy}: Andria, Sorry I am so behind on responding to all of the lovely comments this week, I've been super tired. Indeed, it was stitched first and then once I saw the way the texture of the thread on the black paper, it just called out for color!
Wow, this is so beautiful! I LOVE the vibrant colors. I've also been thoroughly enjoying Jill Berry's book. She is a fantastic writer--she just kind of pulls you in. I've started my own map project as well. She is definitely an inspiration!
Just love it!
