Pint-Sized Pirate Play

This week, my daughter's class performed a play about pirates. The play is based on Peggy the Pint-Sized Pirate by D. M. Bocaz Larson (published in Royalty Free Plays From Freedrama.com: Most Popular Scripts Part 1 (Volume 1). The children, 4th-6th graders, worked for weeks preparing for the performance. They worked on the script, practiced, made costumes, props, backdrops, signs and practiced some more! There was an air of excitement. The play was in the classroom so they had to re-arrange the tables and work spaces typical of a Montessori classroom. Kids from the other classes at school came to see the play, and even grandparents took it all in, as it was grandparents day.

So many nice surprises. The children cast was so well prepared and professional! It was a musical, with clever dialogue, funny elements, class songs and children singing solo. I went to see it twice! I thought I'd share the lovely artwork the kids created for the play.

The painted cardboard backdrops were hung from hooks in vertical columns. This is the ocean and islands where the pirates spent their days.

Behind this layer was a sheet of painted fabric.

Parents were seated in chairs and 3 classes of Pre-K thru K children sat on a carpet in front of the makeshift stage. As you can see, they were fully engaged in the play!

So much fun!
