Praising Kids' Art

My 6 yr old daughter's colored pencil drawings
There is a great post this week at The Happiness Project about how to give good praise. My kids have taught me that it is very important that you see, really see, their artwork. I need to show them that I am really seeing what they've created.
To let my kids, or any kids I interact with, know that their artwork is important and unique, I comment on... the color, the level of detail, perhaps the inventiveness, the color combinations, the patterns, or what is happening in the piece. I ask about what they've drawn. The kids love to tell me why they've selected a certain color combination, to describe the circles with patterns in them. If my daughter shows me the 10th butterfly painting of the day, I might be curious why they are into butterflies that day, what is it about butterflies that intrigues them? Often they do a series of similar pieces ~ notice what changes - is it the detail in a necklace, the pattern of petals, the colors?
