Sketch: Chaotic Facade

"May your heart always be joyful.
May your song always be sung."
~Bob Dylan

5x8" sketch moleskine, pitt pen

Another sketch from our flight last week from a photo from Flickr [ugh, can't find the original photo to link, sorry dear photographer].  It's a good thing that photos are FLAT and don't move. In real life, when I look at something the lines and angles and shadows always look different each time I look at them and that freaks me out and makes me really frustrated.

Why did I pick this to draw? I liked the lack of angles and curves. I practiced working from the center toward the outside and getting the key lines (like the windows, the building edges, etc) in the right spots relative to the other lines.

The lines are wonky and things don't line up as they should... and I sort of fumbled along with the textures (wood, tile, brick, etc). It's a quagmire of lines! Here's a link to the first photo sketch of the trip, the bicycle. On the plus side, it's super engaging to draw from a photo and these two photos kept me quite busy on the flight! More sketches from photos and it's about drawing, not the drawing.

I think this is a wonderful sketch!! I like the cross hatching that you do for shadows! I think it's really hard to get the right balance of size in the picture and you've done that!! Good job :D

I think this is great! I also have a hard time understanding angles and shadows and all that nonsense when I look at real life too. Its HARD. But, just keep trying...I know I am :)
