After painting awhile, I found my stress building instead of dissipating. Sometimes the mood just isn't right. Best to clean up and start again another day. When I'm at the easel (technically sitting at my kids' easel) sometimes I feel like a "fake" artist, because I have no idea what I am doing and no clear direction. It's so different from drawing a mandala, where I feel very confident.
Maybe it's a test run, a spark of an idea for something else.
I am painting to paint. That's it. Just to paint.
Not creating to sell, for an assignment, for The Smithsonian, for The Modern, for a charity auction, as an artifact for a time capsule. Still got a stash of Blick Studio Canvas (cotton canvas, pre-primed for acrylic paint) I got earlier this year, time to get back to the easel...

Good to know someone else feels like a "fake" artist sometimes! I love the paint swirlies personally--they're happy. Loving the ICAD challenge too--gets me out of my head and lets me just put something down on paper without worrying that it isn't good or right or creative or original enough. If something doesn't work, it doesn't work, and I can do another one tomorrow. May have to keep it up as a permanent exercise--so easy to try something new on a small scale! Not nearly so intimidating that way! Thanks a lot.
love this post. it's so important to realize that art is a journey, a practice, an experience. your painting is beautiful, and i have faith that you'll feel more confident with time. good for you for taking a step out of your comfort zone!
