Trippy Typography

Two Fillmore concert posters from 1966-67 from artist Wes Wilson.

Hand-drawn psychedelic art from The Art of the Fillmore: The Poster Series 1966-1971 (Lemke). The collection is described on the jacket as an "intoxicating compendium of the funkiest posters of this century." The historical musical content is magical, true, but the typography.... I especially like the use of negative space to make the block letters. There's a Showcase of Clever Negative Space at Web Design Ledger.

Much of the typography was intentionally chaotic, indecipherable and of course drug-inspired. It is based on 1900's Viennese Secession posters and lettering by Alfred Roller. Roller-influenced fonts include the "psychedelic alphabets" Viatge Quimic & Kool Aid Acid Text, Leslie Cabarga's Love Solid, Keith Bates' Wes Wilson and Jeff Bortniker's Psychedelic Fillmore West.

Font designer Lauren Thompson of Nymphfont announced the totally playful Jolly, a san sarif font with crisp, clean lines that seem to bounce in front of your eyes. Enjoy!
