Wax | Watercolor | Wow

"Be careful what you water your dreams with. Water them with worry and fear and you will produce weeds that choke the life from your dream. Water them with optimism and solutions and you will cultivate success. Always be on the lookout for ways to turn a problem into an opportunity for success. Always be on the lookout for ways to nurture your dream."
— Laozi

making art journal backgrounds with wax + watercolors

you can scribble with wax

you can draw all over the page with wax

you can draw boxes with wax

11x15" watercolor paper, wax resist, watercolors

started with regular old Gulf Canning Wax from the grocery store

the wax comes in rectangular cubes

just take a cube and "draw" with the edge

then watercolor abstractly

a cool background for just about anything

i think this would be super cool cut into ATCs

but be careful because some markers don't like writing on wax!

I really like the last one.

You could also write your journaling with wax and then brush watercolour over it for a different look (or a way to "hide" your journaling.)

Loving this! I am putting some pictures on Flickr today, one of which includes wax with acrylics...does't work as well with acrylic paint tho!

Tammy, I'm so happy you put the warning in about wax and markers. Can't tell you how many points and nibs I've ruined. Love this technique. Hugs, Terri xoxo

Try this: Do a mandala in wax and watercolor over it. I've tried it and it produces some fun results!

Sohpie, What a fun way to hidden journal, and then make it appear, voila!

Jaki, I've tried it with acrylics and since they cover about anything it's not as vivid a difference. Still fun, though, to create some subtle nuances in your backgrounds, right?

Eden, Yes, I'll share what I do with them! Several ideas going through my mind.

Terri, I've killed many a pen too. Doesn't that sound evil!!!

Laura, I think it's a great idea to do a mandala in wax, but given this huge chunk of wax I don't think I would have the control to do a detailed one... the watercolor paper really adds texture since the wax doesn't touch the entire depth. Wondering if you used plain paper, maybe that would work.

Tammy, I can see I need to try and get hold of the Gulf Canning Wax (I use candles normally..). You can take a look at the artwork on my flickr page - I loaded it yesterday.
