Index-Card-A-Day Challenge

What do I do to start?

The 2012 ICAD challenge runs June 1 to July 31, 2012. Create something on an index card [~ 3x5" lined card] every day for 61 days. If you start after June 1 you do not need to catch up, really, truly, seriously, just start. This is not a fancy schmancy challenge. You don't have to be on twitter or flickr or facebook or have a blog.

Just index cards.

[if you are reading in a feed reader, click to read the full post]

Simple materials push you to think in new ways.

Do we have to use index cards?

The short answer is YES. That's the whole point. Like many of you, I love watercolor paper and understand the difference in paper quality. I get it.

Reasons to use 3x5" (or similar) index cards?

  1. You can experiment and be creative using a basic + wonderful office supply.
  2. Take advantage of the lines as part of your doodles, or ignore them, or even work on the back.
  3. Anything goes. Dye the card with pomegranate juice or espresso....

The index cards are part of the challenge.

Are There Prompts?

Links to weekly prompts are posted in the ICAD Directory. Prompts are posted Fridays at 1am CST starting June 1 for 10 weeks (there's an extra week of prompts so you don't go into icad2 withdrawal).

Mediums?

Anything you want. Stitch, paint, draw, stain, weave, even do origami folds with your index cards.

Restrictions?

Nothing vulgar, nothing that would make folks say "ewwwwww" or cringe. Family friendly. Kids are welcome to join the challenge and yes, you can post your kids' cards on the flickr group, just tag them #kidart so we know.

Fees?

It's free! Please consider a donation to the Daisy Yellow Tip Jar [you'll find the yellow link at the top of this page], all donations are immensely appreciated. Or you can buy a Zine to support my pen habit and the squarespace website fees. I appreciate linking to DY if you post about ICAD. We will have Linky Loves each week where you can post a link to your ICAD2 blog posts.

Hashtags? Tags?

On twitter or instagram add #icad2 to your tweet or description. On flickr please add tag icad2 to photos.

Are we sharing?

Share your work via your blog, Flickr, Instagram or Twitter. That gives us lots of ways to interact. I'm not on facebook.

How do you post a photo on twitter?

To share via twitter, upload your photo to a site like Flickr and use that site to send the tweet (you'll have to link the account to your twitter account). Or post to your blog and tweet a link to that post. Upload a photo to Flickr and share it on twitter which basically means Flickr tweets a link back to the photo from your twitter account. Here's, a screen shot of what the tweet looks like when you send it via Flickr. The shortened tweet shows the link, and if you click to expand the tweet you see a mini version of the photo.

here's what the screen looks like when you click the little arrow to share on twitter (you have to set up your flickr account to talk to twitter first)

How do you add your index cards to the Daisy Yellow group on flickr?

Go to the Daisy Yellow group [http://www.flickr.com/groups/daisyyellow] and click "Request to Join" and I'll add you to the group. After you've been added, go to the photo you want to add and above the photo, click "actions" and then "add to/remove from group" and you'll see a drop-down box with the groups you belong to. Help motivate each other by commenting on other people's cards and favoriting the ones you especially like!

I love this idea. I might be in. Need to get over the "I'm not as good an artist" mentality!
